The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays in many Asian cultures, marking the beginning of a new year based on the lunisolar calendar. It's a time for family reunions, feasting, and the exchange of good wishes and red envelopes (hongbao). Central to these celebrations is the captivating Lion Dance, a dynamic performance believed to bring good fortune, ward off evil spirits, and usher in prosperity for the coming year. The energetic movements, pulsating drumbeats, and vibrant colors of the lion dancers are not only a spectacle of skill and artistry but also a powerful symbol of energy, happiness, and the hopeful spirit of renewal that defines the Lunar New Year.
Our students and their families created paper lanterns, decorated crowns, and even got to hold a real snake in celebration of the Year of the Snake. The featured meal was chicken, rice, egg rolls, and fortune cookies. The featured books given to every student were: Celebrate the World: Lunar New Year by Hannah Eliot and Alina Chau, Popo’s Lucky Chinese New Year by Virginia Loh-Hagan and Renné Benoit, and Peppa Pig: Peppa's Chinese New Year by EOne.
